Boulder Colorado — those two words together invoke visions and dreams of spectacular recreational opportunities, particularly the outdoor kind. Where else could you find yourself with choices like world class rock climbing at Chatauqua Park, kayaking through the slalom course on Boulder Creek, fly-fishing throughout the county, skiing or snowboarding just a half hour into the mountains, hang-gliding off the foothills just north of town, mountain or meadow hiking and biking ranging from gentle to truly rugged, swimming, windsurfing or sailing at the Boulder Reservoir, Frisbee-golf at the South Boulder Rec. Center or the real thing at a number of challenging and beautiful courses around town, or just hanging out at any number of the beautiful city parks or open spaces throughout and around Boulder? In a town where every other neighbor has climbed Mt. Everest backwards or has a few Olympic medals in a box in the attic, recreation is taken very seriously.
Boulder is located right at the base of the Rocky Mountains, where the plains of Eastern Colorado meet the snowy peaks of the Front Range. Boulder was first home to the Arapahoe Indian tribe, although Comanches, Cheyennes & Sioux have also been a part of its history. Gold-seekers established the first non-native settlement in 1858. It developed as a supply base for miners going into the mountains in search of gold and silver. Boulder City residents provided these miners with equipment, agricultural products, housing and transport services, and gambling and drinking establishments.
Boulder (or the Republic of Boulder as it is often termed) is now predominantly a college town - home to the prestigious University of Colorado(CU). CU each year manages to make the top 10 list of best 'party' colleges in the nation. The university district is called 'the Hill', where sporting celebrations often get out of hand, with occasional bonfires built with sofas and other furniture.
Downtown Boulder is just small enough to make every attraction within a 10 to 15 minute stroll, yet big enough that you can spend the entire day downtown and still wish you had more time to see everything. The Pearl Street Mall is the original heart of Boulder, started when the mines in Gold Hill and Sugarloaf, started doing well. Traditionally, when you think of a mall, you think of shopping. Although the Pearl Street Mall offers some of the best shopping in Colorado, people head downtown for a variety of activities. Satisfy your palate while dining at one of the many fine restaurants or have a hot dog from one of the Mall vending carts. Stop and watch street performers or just grab a spot on a bench and watch the people go by.
